This paper studies how to choose the input and sampling frequencies, together with the number of samples to acquire, so that coherent sampling is achieved. This choice matters when analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are tested with the histogram method, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) method or the sine-fitting method.
It is shown that a trade-off exists between how closely the actual frequencies can be kept to the desired ones and the duration of the test, which is governed by the number of acquired samples.
Several algorithms are presented and compared in terms of their complexity, advantages and drawbacks.
